Prewrite
1. What are you good at? I'm good at playing the violin.
2. How do you feel when you're doing the thing you're good at? I feel like I could do anything.
3. How would you feel if people wouldn't let you do the thing you're good at? I would feel unimportant.

Chapter 1
1. What problems or conflicts are presented in chapter one? Tao needing to find a rabbit is an obvious one; identify at least two more. They are hungry because it is cold.
2. Predict the resolution of each conflict. Spring will come and the animals will come out which will make it easer to hunt.
Chapter 2
What two important events happen in this chapter? He almost gets a "lion" but it ends up being a wolf. He had some grubs in his hand.
Chapter 3
1. What do Tao and Ram learn to do together? They learn how to hunt together Ram looks for the food and Tao kills it.
2. What decision does Tao tell Volt? That he wants to hunt alone so Volt gets mad.
3. Look at Tao's decisions and actions from Volt's perspective. Pretend you are Volt. Write a first person paragraph explaining how you feel. I'm scared to lose any hunters we don't have enough food as it is. We can't risk it I won't let it happen, but if he goes with the hunters then goes away then finds them before thy come back to camp then I think it's ok but as long as he's in my tribe then he will hunt with the men. But if he does not then he will be removed from the group.

In a good paragraph, describe Tao's mother. Start with an interest grabber. Then write your topic sentence. Give three details or examples to support your thesis. Use a quotation from the chapter. Have you ever been removed from you mother FOREVER? If you have then you will know how Tao feels since he lost a grate mom. The thing that makes her grate is that she stayed with him when they tried to kill him because of his bad foot. She was the one who was removed from her tribe in the raids she survived until one bad winter that is when she died. So Tao was left alone then Kala helped him. His moms name was Vedra.
Chapter 5
1. Which two animals does Tao try to draw? He tried to draw a horse and Ram the wolf dog.
2. Which is easier for him and why? Ram was easer to draw because of his position.
Chapter 6
1. Graybeard realizes that Tao has broken two taboos of his clan. What are they? He knows that he has gone to the Slough to hunt and he's been hunting with a wolf dog.
2. Which taboo doesn't he know about yet? That Tao is painting in caves.
3. Graybeard describes Volt differently than we have. What aspects of Volt's character is Graybeard acknowledging? He is a good man.
Chapter 7
Write your reaction to the last paragraph in the chapter. Do you agree or disagree with Graybeard? Is what he says true for those times, but not now? Or, is the reverse true: was it not true then, but true now?
Chapter 8
An important theme in this novel is that people should follow their dreams and do what they believe is right, even if they don't follow their society's expected ways. I think it's o.k. because it's your body and mind you should be able to do what ever YOU want to do.
The author examines this theme in a stone age setting. Imagine a similar situation today.
What situation did you imagine? I would imagine that a women would go to the army and her husband would tell her to stay then they get into an argument.
In the situation you imagined, should the person follow his or her dreams or should they follow society's rules? Give your opinion. In this situation I think the women should follow her dreams because on her side she's helping the community.
Chapter 9
Why do you think Graybeard changed his mind? I think he changed his mind because he saw Tao's talent.
What does this tell you about his character? This tells me that he can change his mind easily.
Chapter 10
1. What are the "mountains-that-walk"? It is a herd of mammoths, horses, and antelopes.
2. What almost happened to Tao? He almost got ran over by a mammoth.
Chapter 11
Do you think Graybeard is a good teacher? Why?
Would you like to have been taught a skill by him? Why?
Chapter 12
1. Name some of the ingredients used to make paint. Blood, animal fat, 3 duck eggs. Which surprised you most? I think the blood surprised me the most.
2. Why is Tao afraid at the end of the chapter? He thinks Graybeard is going to die.
Chapter 13
1. Even if Ram had succeeded in hunting the deer, do you think it was a good idea of Tao's to "show off" his dog's ability to hunt? Explain. I don't think it was a good idea for Tao to show off Ram because even if Ram did catch the doe Volt would get mad because he (Ram) would get their food.
2. Predict what will happen next. If you've read ahead, invent an alternate scene.I think that Tao will not let Ram back into the Vally people's land.

1. Why does Tao cross the river? To save Ram.
2. What decision does Graybeard reach? That Tao WILL become a cave painter after him.
Chapter 15
What problem does Tao have by the end of the chapter? He throws his torch on the floor and it goes out so he gets lost.

Wow! What a chapter! What was your reaction? Tense? Surprised? You predicted it? Write a paragraph describing your reaction. I think that it was VERY weired that Volt turned out to be Tao's dad I mean how can you be so mean to YOUR own son like that!!O.M.G.

Why does Tao feel he needs to go to the Mountain People? To paint and feel important.

Write a narrative describing what happens next. Make sure your plot has a conflict, a climax, and a resolution. You can introduce new characters if you want.
